Groundwater Depletion Can Be Reversed

This simplified visualization shows the main idea behind Scott Jasechko’s Analytical Review “Global cases of groundwater recovery after interventions”.

The curve shows a declining aquifer, a turning point where interventions are introduced, and a later phase of groundwater recovery.

The triangle shows the three main types of interventions linked to recovery:

• Alternative water supply
• Artificial recharge
• Policy or market

Each corner represents one main intervention. The areas between two corners show cases where two drivers were combined. The center shows cases where all three intervention types were involved.

The n-values show how many groundwater recovery cases analysed in the paper, fall into each category.

The graphic is a simplified conceptual guide to make the overall message easier to understand:

Groundwater depletion is not inevitable.

In this Analytical Review, Scott Jasechko and colleagues examine 67 groundwater recovery cases worldwide and provide a balanced view of both successful interventions and possible trade-offs.

A must-read for anyone interested in groundwater, water management, or environmental sustainability.
